Dewsbury Moor lad and newly crowned British super featherweight boxing champion Gary Sykes has been honoured at 10 Dowing Street as one of MP Shahid Malik's 'Community Heroes'.

Cadets and staff from 96 (Dewsbury) Squadron, Air Training Corps welcomed their donation of a brand new pool table from local MP Shahid Malik last week. The Dewsbury MP won the table last year when he retained the House of Commons Pool Championship for the third year running.

Local MP Shahid Malik declared the 2nd annual ‘Dewsbury Pensioner’s Fair’ a ‘great success’ after more than 200 local people attended the event. Held at the Town Hall, and organised by Mr Malik, the event is an opportunity for local pensioners to speak to a number of different organisations such as DWP Pensions, Warm Front, NHS Direct, Kirklees Benefit Advice, West Yorkshire Police and Fire Service, Carer’s Gateway, Age Concern and many others.

MP Shahid Malik put his own safety aside as he waded in to calm a violent street row at the weekend. Mr Malik risked being punched himself as he calmed down two families arguing over a parking space in Tanhouse Street, Ravensthorpe. He separated the feuding families until police arrived.

Stones representing lives lost under the Nazi regime were placed on a war memorial during a special service in Dewsbury organised by the office of Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik. The Holocaust Memorial Day service at Longcauseway Garden of Remembrance marked the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has been visiting local primary schools to hand out prizes and certificates in his annual Christmas card competition. The MP organises a yearly competition for Eid and Christmas cards where local children are asked to design a card and the winning entries are used for Mr Malik’s own card, which is sent out to thousands of homes in Dewsbury and Mirfield.
