Fire Services Minister Shahid Malik was on hand to present one of the awards at the West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Awards 2009. The event was held last Friday at Cedar Court Hotel in Bradford. The Dewsbury and Mirfield MP presented the award for ‘Retained Fire Station of the Year’ to Skelmanthorpe Fire Station.

Local MP Shahid Malik was on hand to chat with residents over coffee and cakes, and to read out the raffle numbers, at the coffee morning at Tentercroft Court last Friday. The event was jointly organised by Soroptimist International of Dewsbury and Tentercroft Court in order to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Fire Services Minister and Dewsbury & Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has paid tribute to the courage and bravery of fire fighters following the release of a new set of stamps issued by Royal Mail this this month. Mr Malik also made time to meet with some of the crew from Dewsbury Fire Station at the Yorkshire Day event at Ravensthorpe Community Centre last month. Crew Manager John Jackson and his crew were present to let local residents know about the dangers of fire and to inform them about their free Home Fire Risk Checks.

Last weekend saw Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik host his fourth annual Summer Gala in Crow Nest Park. Over a hundred guests attended the event and lapped up the sunshine and the scones.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik led a group of 25 people to hand in a petition at 10 Downing Street to “Save education in Mirfield” last Sunday. The petition, containing 6,903 signatures, was organised by the parent action group REACH.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has once again demanded that Kirklees council reconsider their decision to close Mirfield’s Castle Hall School. The call comes after today’s news that school achieved a remarkable 73.5% A-C grades including Maths and English.

Shahid Malik clashed with Kirklees cabinet members last Friday during an emergency crunch meeting called by the local MP in the presence of Government education supremo Ed Balls. The Secretary of State for Schools was visiting Dewsbury as part an ongoing attempt by the local MP to save Castle Hall from closure and The Mirfield Free Grammar from unwanted expansion.
