Schools Secretary Ed Balls is to meet with teachers, parents and governors of Castle Hall and Mirfield Free Grammar School. Local MP Shahid Malik confirmed that the cabinet minister would visit Mirfield following talks with Mr Balls about the future of Castle Hall School.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has offered condolences to the families of the two constituents who passed away after contracting swine flu. Mr Malik said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who have tragically passed away. This is an incredibly sad time as families come to terms with their loss."

Government Minister and Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has been cleared of any wrongdoing by ministerial sleaze watchdog Sir Philip Mawer. Mr Malik who was Britain's first Muslim Minister agreed to stand down while an inquiry looked into Daily Telegraph allegations he had received preferential treatment by paying reduced rent for his home and office in Dewsbury. It was a claim Mr Malik strenuously denied.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has been appointed to serve as Minister for Communities and Local Government. News of the new role comes just hours after Mr Malik was cleared of breaching ministerial code by an investigation headed by Sir Philip Mawer.

Following a meeting with Yorkshire Water, local MP Shahid Malik has confirmed that work on a £4m relief road which will divert heavy goods traffic away from Earlsheaton residents has moved one step closer. Mr Malik said that Yorkshire Water had now submitted a planning application to Kirklees Council to progress the development.

An award winning community worker was presented with a special achievement award by MP Shahid Malik following the end of a pioneering project in Dewsbury West. Roger O'Doherty has for the past seven years managed the Pathfinder Neighbourhood Management but left the post last Friday following the conclusion of the project.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has vowed to fight the proposal to develop more than 5,000 houses in Denby Dale and Kirkburton. Mr Malik, who serves as Justice Minister, met on Sunday with leading members of the Skelmanthorpe Community Action Group (SCAG) including Chair Chris Ward and Save Our Scissett (SOS) to discuss council plans for development in the area.
