Postmasters from Thornhill Edge and Savile Town teamed up with MP Shahid Malik this week to celebrate the unique decision by Post Office Ltd to reprieve two branches designated for closure in the same constituency. Mr Malik is the only MP in the country to have successfully fought and saved two Post Offices.

Shahid Malik has become the only MP in the country to successfully save two Post Offices with the announcement that the Thornhill Edge branch was to be removed from the closure list following the submission of a 38-page report to Post Office Ltd by the Dewsbury and Mirfield MP.

MP Shahid Malik has said he is deeply troubled by proposals put forward by Kirklees Council which he has described 'ill-thought through and deeply flawed'. The plans, which were released by Kirklees earlier this month, would see Mirfield's Castle Hall School and the sixth form at St John Fisher, Dewsbury, closed.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has pulled off what he described as 'mission impossible' having forced a u-turn over the decision to close Savile Town Post Office. Three weeks ago Mr Malik handed over a 16-page report to Post Office Ltd's national consultation team, outlining what he called the 'compelling case' to reverse their decision on the branch closure. The news means that Mr Malik is only one of two MPs in West Yorkshire to have successfully contested a closure decision by Post Office Ltd in the most recent round of cuts.

MP Shahid Malik joined staff and patients at Dewsbury District Hospital on Friday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the NHS. The Dewsbury and Mirfield MP took a giant Birthday card on behalf of local people to say ‘thank you' to staff at the hospital.

After a frantic period of lobbying by Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik the Yorkshire Water board agreed on Wednesday to approve a plan to start work on an alternative access road to the Mitchell Laithes site in Earlsheaton.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik visited Boothroyd Junior & Infant School last Friday to take questions from members of the school council as part of his Dewsbury Citizens initiative. The MP spent an hour speaking with the pupils before taking part in an impromptu cricket match in the playground.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has held more discussions with Yorkshire Water chief, Kevin Whiteman, in an attempt to seek a long term solution to the problems of HGV traffic accessing the Mitchell Laithes site in Earlsheaton. Mr Malik stressed that the current arrangements were not working and that in his view were incapable of working, stressing that the only solution was major investment by Yorkshire Water in an alternative access route.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik has spoken of the need for a "change in society" after the brutal killing of a teenager in a Crow Nest Park, just minutes from his home. Speaking after police made a series of arrests in connection with the murder of 17-year-old Amar Aslam, Mr Malik called for greater parental responsibility and tougher sentences on violent teenagers.
