Following a meeting between Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik and Danny Lockwood the parties have jointly announced that there will not now be a retrial in their libel case. The MP sued Mr Lockwood, former councillor Jonathan Scott, and Press publishers NewsPost Ltd for defamation over a letter and follow-up article carried in The Press in May 2006. Following a two-week trial before Mr Justice Eady at the High Court in London, a jury failed to reach a majority verdict.

Local MP and International Development Minister Shahid Malik has just returned at the weekend from a mercy mission in the Burma region. Mr Malik met with Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej of Thailand and UN officials, and also had meetings individually with representatives from the governments of India, Japan and Indonesia in a bid to get South East Asian countries, in partnership with the UN, to lead on building a humanitarian bridge to people affected in the cyclone hit region of Burma.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik is today [Thursday] to visit the cyclone-hit Burma region as a ministerial envoy in a bid to broker an agreement which would see the Burmese government relaxing aid restrictions and allowing the international relief effort to reach survivors of Cyclone Nargis.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has again called upon Kirklees Council to address the unfair "two-tier" system of car parking in town centres. The MP said that Kirklees was guilty of discrimination against Dewsbury and that it had to stop.

In 2005 Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik intervened and persuaded the then Health Secretary, John Reid, to inject more than £30m of working capital into local hospitals allowing them to restructure finances and saving the trust from financial collapse.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has again renewed calls for action over the unfair “two-tier” system of car parking in Kirklees town centres. Mr Malik, who has been fighting a long running campaign for free parking in the town since November 2006, believes town centre trade has been hit as visitors choose to shop in other areas with more welcoming parking facilities.

Local MP Shahid Malik in his role as International Development Minister led the government's response to Darfur Day by meeting British and Darfuri children at 10 Downing Street and listening to their concerns. Before taking them into one of the State rooms at No10, he along with 11 year old Roa Hassan, who came to the UK 3 years ago from Darfur, spoke to journalists.

Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik carried out his first official engagement as Patron of the Royal British Legion last week when he visited veterans in three Dewsbury care homes. The MP was shown around the homes by the former welfare secretary of the Royal British Legion, Dennis Chaffer, and stayed to chat with residents about their experiences.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik has stepped up efforts to bring jobs to the town and is to facilitate a meeting between Kirklees Council and the owners of Empire House. The move follows a meeting between the MP and Shapoor Naghshineh of RCP at which investment in the building and the wider regeneration of the town centre was discussed.
