Stones representing lives lost under the Nazi regime were placed on a war memorial during a special service in Dewsbury organised by the office of Dewsbury and Mirfield MP Shahid Malik.

The Holocaust Memorial Day service at Longcauseway Garden of Remembrance marked the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp.

Among those reading poems and prayers were the Rev Canon Kevin Partington and Norma Fineburg, whose parents escaped Germany on one of the last trains out of Berlin.

A minute's silence was also held in memory of those who died during the Holocaust and more recent genocides.

Friday's service was organised by local MP Shahid Malik, a patron of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust. Mr Malik said:

"Our responsibility is to remember those who were persecuted and murdered. Our challenge is to make the experience and words of the victims and survivors of the Holocuast and subsequent genocides a meaningful part of our future."

He added that it was essential for people of all faiths to unite and work towards creating strong and accepting communities.
